Student Involvement in Your Care

We are a teaching practice affiliated with the Midwifery Education Programs at Toronto Metropolitan and McMaster Universities, as well as TMU’s International Midwifery Pre-registration Program. Students will accompany midwives in all aspects of client care. We appreciate your family's involvement in the education of new midwives!

sarah mason (Green team)

Hello! My name is Sarah (she/her). I am in my second year of the midwifery program at Toronto Metropolitan University and am thrilled to be doing a placement with Kensington Midwives this year. I have worked as a birth doula for the past several years, both here in the GTA and the UK. My love of this work motivated me to pursue midwifery. It is a joy and privilege to support parents through this special time in their lives.

I have a prior degree in Psychology from Queen's University and am a mom to two incredible kids, both born with the help of midwives. Thank you for allowing me on this journey with you and giving me this opportunity to learn.

Shaquiera Mayowa (green team)

Hello, my name is Shaquiera Mayowa (she/her). I am a second-year midwifery student at Toronto Metropolitan University, and I am very grateful to be completing my first placement at Kensington Midwives.

To share a little about myself, I am a Black Indo-Caribbean queer woman. I was born in Toronto but spent much of my life living in different places. Prior to starting the midwifery program, I completed a Bachelor of Arts at McGill University, where I majored in International Development with a double minor in Psychology and Feminism/Social Justice Studies. It was during this time that I found my passion for community care and holistic health.

The birth of my daughter in 2022 introduced me to the field of midwifery after receiving the opportunity to be cared for by midwives. Growing up as a Black woman in Canada, the healthcare system was often a source of fear and anxiety, but my positive birthing experience became a catalyst for my love of midwifery as a profession and as a model of holistic healthcare.

I am super excited for the opportunity to be back in my hometown, working to make healthcare more accessible for marginalized groups and caring for my community. Outside of midwifery, you can find me reading, enjoying time outdoors, or spending time with loved ones!

Elizabeth Kim (Purple team)

My name is Elizabeth Kim, and I am currently a second-year midwifery student at McMaster University!

Before coming to the Midwifery Education Program, I attended Western University, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in kinesiology and a minor in biology. In my spare time, I enjoy running, spending time with friends and family, and coaching cheerleading.

What I love about midwifery care is the emphasis on informed choice that midwives can provide. These meaningful discussions lead to personalized care and help build trusting relationships. I believe that pregnancy and birth are normal and natural processes and value active and healthy lifestyle habits.

I am excited and grateful to be included in your care and to continue my education at Kensington Midwives!

Regina Iyamu (Orange Team)

Hello! My name is Regina Iyamu and I am delighted to be at Kensington Midwives.

I was born in Lagos, Nigeria, I moved to Canada with my family at the age of 14 and have lived in Toronto ever since. I graduated with a Honours Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Toronto, majoring in Biology and minoring in Religion and Women and Gender Studies. My academic background reflects my commitment to understanding the intersections of science, gender, and health.

As a mother to my daughter I have drawn inspiration from my own journey through motherhood to advocate for empowerment, compassionate care for women and families. I also have three years of hands-on experience working at a women's and men's shelters in Toronto, where I supported vulnerable populations with care, dignity, and respect.

I have a deep-rooted passion for advocacy and women's reproductive health. I feel extremely privileged to be a midwifery student and potentially be a part of an important part of many lives.

alex cheeseman (yellow team)

My name is Alex Cheesman (she/her pronouns), a student midwife completing my BHSc through the Midwifery Education Program. I am excited and honoured to undertake my senior year placement with Kensington Midwives.

My journey to become a midwife is one years in the making. I previously earned my HBA from University of Toronto and pursued a lengthy career in the nonprofit world, which allowed me to work in support of organizations that aim to create a safer, healthier, more just, and equitable world. This professional path culminated in my working with a feminist health organization, which animated my passion for health equity and reignited my lifelong interest in health sciences. I am thrilled to now be training to put those interests to work in service of pregnant folks, their babies, and families.

When I am not studying, I nestle into a new book, a crossword, or one of my creative projects, whether it be knitting, drawing, or jewelry making. I was raised by a jazz musician, giving me a deep and abiding love of live music, which I will indulge in whenever I have the opportunity. Finally, I am an avid (although not particularly fast) daily cyclist, preferring to take in the city at a bike’s pace over that of a car, watching the evolution of our city’s communities as I go.

Jada Johnson-Mills (PURple team)

My name is Jada Johnson-Mills (she/her), and I am in my fourth year of the Midwifery Education Program at Toronto Metropolitan University. I am thrilled to be back at Kensington Midwives for my final year of clinical placement and look forward to being part of your journey throughout this special time.

I was born in North York and raised in Mississauga. Before midwifery, I completed a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Biology. My passion for reproductive health led me to midwifery after learning about the profession from a friend in the program.

Outside of midwifery, I foster dogs with a rescue organization and previously helped goats deliver their kids on my friend’s farm. I also love cooking (and eating), as well as spending time with family and friends.

I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to learn from both the midwives and clients at Kensington Midwives and look forward to getting to know you all throughout the year!
